The Pictou–Caribou ferry service connecting Nova Scotia to Prince Edward Island is operated by Northumberland Ferries Limited. County council is preparing a submission to the federal government regarding the future of the seasonal ferry service.
Background
The ferry runs May through January each year and is a critical tourism and commercial link between the two provinces. The Confederation Bridge provides a year-round alternative, but adds approximately 3 hours of driving for travellers heading to eastern PEI.
Several regional chambers of commerce have called for federal subsidy to extend the season to year-round operation. Local fishers and tourism operators have expressed divided opinions.
Questions for the community:
1. Do you use the Pictou–Caribou ferry regularly? 2. Would year-round service benefit your household or business? 3. Should the federal or provincial government subsidize expanded service?
Please share your perspective below. Council's submission deadline is August 1, 2026.
