The local food and craft drink scene in Pictou County has grown steadily over the past decade, driven by a combination of returning residents with outside experience, the continued strength of the Saturday farmers market in New Glasgow, and a fishing and agricultural base that provides excellent raw ingredients for anyone who cares to use them.
Steinhart Brewery
Steinhart Brewing Company, based in New Glasgow, produces a range of lagers and ales with a focus on clean, well-made craft beer using quality ingredients. The German brewing tradition that influenced the founder's approach has produced beers with a more precise, European sensibility than much of the hop-forward craft beer that dominates the market elsewhere. Steinhart products are available at the brewery and at select Nova Scotia Liquor Corporation locations throughout the province.
Nova Scotia Spirit Co. and the Blue Lobster Public House
Located in Stellarton, Nova Scotia Spirit Co. has been producing spirits since 2015 with results that have attracted national and international recognition. Their Blue Lobster Vodka won a gold medal at the 2016 San Francisco World Spirits Competition β a significant result in a field judged by palate rather than provenance. The distillery also produces rum, gin, and a growing range of ready-to-drink products. The adjacent Blue Lobster Public House serves as a tasting room and retail outlet, with the full product range available alongside local craft beers, ciders, and Nova Scotia wines.
The New Glasgow Farmers Market
The Saturday morning market on the New Glasgow riverfront runs year-round and assembles more than 70 vendors during peak summer season. The market's food vendors include producers of fresh vegetables, local meats, fresh fish, smoked fish products, honey, maple syrup, artisan bread and pastry, fresh pasta, and prepared foods. Live music through the morning keeps the atmosphere relaxed. This is not a craft fair that has drifted away from food β it is a functioning market where regular customers do meaningful portions of their weekly grocery shopping.
Farm Stands Along the Sunrise Trail
The agricultural land along Highway 6 between New Glasgow and Tatamagouche supports a productive fruit and vegetable sector, and farm stands appear along the route through summer and fall. Strawberry season arrives in late June and July. Blueberries and raspberries follow. By September, apples, corn, squash, and root vegetables dominate. Maple syrup operations in the county's interior β particularly in the hills around Scotsburn and Barneys River β produce genuine Nova Scotia maple products sold directly from farm and online.
Where to Eat Well
Stone Soup Cafe in Pictou for seafood chowder. Harbour House Ales & Spirits on the Pictou waterfront for fresh seafood and local craft beer. The Braeside Inn restaurant for a more formal evening meal. The Stellarton area for casual dining near the Spirit Co. taproom. And the New Glasgow Farmers Market for the best Saturday morning food experience in the county β a meal assembled from a dozen vendors, eaten at picnic tables by the river while a local musician plays fiddle tunes.
