Pictou County is underused cycling territory. The combination of converted rail trails, quiet rural roads, and the coastal Highway 6 corridor creates options that range from easy family rides to full-day road cycling challenges, all within a county that most cyclists simply drive through on their way to Cape Breton or PEI.

The Short Line Trail — 12.7 km (Rail Trail)

The most accessible cycling route in the county for riders of varying fitness and experience, the Short Line Trail follows a converted railway bed from Brown's Point through Lyons Brook to Scotsburn. The surface is compacted gravel, largely flat, and maintained for multi-use access including cycling, walking, snowmobiling, and skiing. The route passes through rural landscape — agricultural fields, woodlot sections, and small community areas — that has changed little since the rail line operated. This is the ideal choice for families with children or cyclists seeking a relaxed outing without significant climbing.

The Samson Trail — New Glasgow (Rail Trail)

Built on the bed of Canada's first iron railway — the line that the Samson locomotive operated from 1839 — the Samson Trail follows the East River through New Glasgow between the riverside marina and adjacent areas. The trail has interpretive panels explaining the railway history. It connects to the Pioneer Trail along the river corridor. Both trails are paved and suitable for commuter and recreational cyclists.

Sunrise Trail Coastal Road Cycling

Highway 6 through Pictou County — the designated Sunrise Trail — carries enough tourism traffic in summer to justify caution but is manageable for experienced cyclists. The road passes through Waterside, Caribou, and the town of Pictou with views of the Northumberland Strait along significant sections. The terrain is rolling rather than flat, with grades modest enough for cyclists of intermediate fitness. A full circuit from New Glasgow to Pictou and back via Route 6 and interior roads is approximately 70 kilometres.

Fitzpatrick Mountain Road — Challenging Climb

For cyclists wanting genuine climbing, the road to Fitzpatrick Mountain in the Scotsburn area provides elevation gain with panoramic views as reward at the summit. The gravel road section near the top requires a bike comfortable on variable surfaces. Wind turbines mark the ridgeline and provide scale against the valley view below.

Practical Information

Bicycle rentals are not widely advertised in Pictou County — most cycling visitors bring their own equipment. The New Glasgow and Pictou areas have basic bicycle repair services at sporting goods retailers. Helmets are legally required for cyclists of all ages in Nova Scotia. The prime cycling season runs from May through October, with shoulder months offering fewer tourists on the roads. July and August are warmest but busiest. The rail trails are rideable into November in most years.
