On the Pictou waterfront, tucked between the marina and the heritage quay, the Northumberland Fisheries Museum tells the story of the communities that have made their living from the sea along this stretch of Nova Scotia shoreline.
The Lobsters
The biggest draw, especially for kids, is the touch tank. Inside, visitors encounter some of nature's rarities: a deep-blue lobster, an albino lobster, and a calico-patterned specimen. These genetic anomalies are extraordinarily rare — the odds of catching a blue lobster in the wild are estimated at around 1 in 2 million. The fishers who haul them up in their traps typically donate them to aquariums and museums rather than the cooking pot.
Adjacent to the museum is a lobster hatchery where young lobsters are reared before being released back into the Northumberland Strait. It's a tangible conservation effort you can witness firsthand.
Inside the Museum
Exhibits include a replica fisherman's bunkhouse — the kind of spartan accommodation that crews lived in on fishing islands and processing wharves generations ago. The Silver Bullet, an elegant early-1930s lobster boat, sits restored in the exhibit space. Display panels trace the methods used to harvest everything from groundfish to scallops to clams, reflecting the seasonal rhythms that still govern life along this shore.
A small lighthouse research centre nearby on the waterfront honours the keepers and structures that guided vessels through these waters before GPS made navigation seem simple.
Pictou County is in Lobster Fishing Area 26A. The spring harvest ends in late June, which is why the Pictou Lobster Carnival — North America's longest-running lobster festival — celebrates the close of the season every July.
