New Glasgow sits at the confluence of the East River's three branches — the setting that gave it both its natural geography and its industrial logic. The town grew through the 19th century as a shipbuilding centre, coal depot, and eventually steel town. Today it's the commercial and cultural hub of Pictou County, with a growing arts scene anchored by the East River waterfront.
New Glasgow Farmers Market Every Saturday from 9 am to 1 pm, the New Glasgow Farmers Market assembles more than 70 vendors on the riverfront. The market runs year-round, though the summer session is the most vibrant, with fresh produce, local meats, baked goods, honey, herbs, fresh fish, and Nova Scotia spirits all on offer. Live music plays through the morning. The market is one of the genuinely good ones — not a craft fair that has drifted away from food, but a real farmers' market where you can do a week's grocery shopping while talking to the people who grew or made everything in your basket.
Glasgow Square Theatre The open-air amphitheatre on the East River waterfront at 155 Riverside Parkway was opened in September 2001 and anchors the town's summer cultural calendar. The Jubilee music festival, which has run since 1996, brings Canadian and East Coast artists to the outdoor stage each summer. Dragon boat racing on the East River, Ribfest, and various other events use the waterfront as their setting.
Carmichael-Stewart House / Pictou County History Museum Built in 1880 as a wedding gift from shipbuilder James Carmichael to his son, this Victorian mansion at 86 Temperance Street houses the Pictou County History Museum. The architecture alone — stained glass, grand staircase, original hardwood — is worth the visit. The collections include Trenton Glassware from the 1881–1917 glass manufacturing era, an extensive textile and clothing collection, and photographs tracing the county's history.
Africentric Heritage Park On Vale Road at the south edge of town, this free park commemorates the Black Loyalists and African Nova Scotian community whose presence in Pictou County dates to the mid-18th century. The pyramid-shaped memorial unveiled in 1990 marks the community's history and the Vale Road neighbourhood that has served as its centre.
