The shoreline between Cape John and River John — at the western edge of Pictou County — doesn't get the same crowds as the beaches closer to the ferry terminal, which is exactly what makes it ideal for sea kayaking.
Coastal Spirit Expeditions operates guided half-day tours along this stretch, launching from Cape John Harbour. The tours run at 10 am, 2 pm, and 6 pm, and are suitable for complete beginners as well as experienced paddlers. Groups run from two to ten people.
Wildlife Along the Way
The Northumberland Strait shoreline here is home to a large resident seal population, and the seals are famously curious about kayakers. On most tours, the group is accompanied by at least a few seals that surface alongside the kayaks, observe the paddlers, and move on — an interaction that tends to stop even the most seasoned paddler mid-stroke. Bald eagles, great blue herons, and various waterfowl are reliable sightings along the salt marshes.
What's Included
Each tour includes a locally sourced picnic from a nearby bakery, eaten on shore mid-route. All equipment — kayak, paddle, life jacket, spray skirt — is provided, and instructor Peter Whaley walks beginners through the basics before launching.
