Winter in Pictou County: Skiing, Snowmobiling, and the Frost Fest

When the snow falls on Pictou County, the outdoor season doesn't end — it transforms into cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, sleigh rides, and the annual Pictou Frost Fest.

The Northumberland Shore isn't usually what people picture when they imagine winter recreation in Nova Scotia, but Pictou County offers a legitimate winter outdoor season, particularly for those willing to range slightly beyond the immediate coastline.

Pictou Frost Fest The annual Pictou Frost Fest is the anchor of the winter social calendar. The festival brings together cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, sleigh rides, and various winter activities on and around the Pictou waterfront. Community bonfire events and evening gatherings make it a social occasion as much as an athletic one.

Keppoch Mountain While technically in Antigonish County rather than Pictou, Keppoch Mountain is the go-to destination for mountain biking in summer and Nordic skiing in winter for residents throughout northeastern Nova Scotia. The 40-kilometre multi-use trail network includes about 30 kilometres of purpose-built tracks ranging from beginner-friendly loops to expert-level descents. In winter, the same trails become groomed and ungroomed cross-country skiing terrain, with fat-tire biking continuing through the season for those willing to ride in snow.

Short Line Trail The 12.7-kilometre converted rail trail from Brown's Point to Scotsburn through Lyons Brook is maintained for snowmobiling and skiing in winter. The compacted surface and relatively gentle grade make it accessible to most fitness levels.

Pictou County Snow Riders The Pictou County Snow Riders club maintains an active snowmobile trail network through the county and connects to the Nova Scotia snowmobile trail system. Membership provides access to maintained corridors through agricultural and woodland areas.

Horse-Drawn Sleigh Rides MacLellans Mountain offers horse-drawn sleigh rides through snow-covered landscape — the kind of winter experience that feels genuinely historical rather than staged. Shelby Ranch, normally a summer attraction with trail rides and axe throwing, also adds winter programming in the appropriate season.
