Hector Heritage Quay: Your Complete Visitor's Guide

Board a full-scale replica of the Ship Hector, explore working blacksmith and carpentry shops, and discover Pictou's founding story — all on the waterfront.

The Hector Heritage Quay sits right on the Pictou waterfront, and it's one of the most hands-on heritage experiences in Atlantic Canada. The centrepiece is a full-scale replica of the Ship Hector — the vessel that carried 189 Scottish Highlanders to this harbour in September 1773.

What to Expect

Unlike many museums where history sits behind glass, this one puts you inside it. You can board the replica ship and walk through three levels of exhibits, seeing the cramped quarters where families huddled for eleven weeks at sea. A panoramic theatre on the third level brings the voyage to life.

On the grounds around the ship, working craftspeople demonstrate traditional skills. The blacksmith forge produces the smell of hot iron and the ring of hammer on anvil. The carpentry shop houses workers restoring original ship components using historical drawings. The rigging room displays the rope-working tools that kept a tall ship under sail. None of this is theatre — this is real craftsmanship using authentic methods.

New for 2025/2026

The Quay unveiled new exhibits dedicated to the Mi'kmaq people of Piktuk, the Indigenous community who had called this harbour home for thousands of years before European contact. These exhibits tell the story of cultural exchange — including the crucial assistance Mi'kmaq community members provided to the struggling settlers in that first winter.
